In the case of Atalanta, Princess of Arcadia, Huntress and Warrior, her story seems even more deeply buried, my awareness of her, was a name referenced in the painting Hippomenes and Atalanta by Noël Hallé, housed in the Louvre Museum. Instead, she feels responsibility and duty to do best by this child, but recognizes that the best life for both her son and herself may be one apart from one another. As a baby she was left to die, presumably because her father (King Arcadia) hoped for a son, but remarkably she survived against the odds.

BookBrowse seeks out and recommends the best in contemporary fiction and nonfiction—books that not only engage and entertain but also deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. They intruded on our forest every now and again, horns blaring and the thunder of their shouts startling the birds from the treetops, but in all their noise and chaos, they never knew for a moment how close they might pass to me, a nymph, or the goddess herself. Not like Atalanta here, who can already run across the mountainsides with her all day and come back refreshed and ready for more. The romantic thread highlighted her vulnerability and mortality and was very moving and the ending to the book was good “I am wild, I am free. Greek tragedy, of course, is pretty much non-stop gloom, punctuated by tension, betrayal, suicide, incest and/or maiming, before a bit more gloom to round things off; and female characters are often on the receiving end of the worst treatment tragedy has to offer.

Strong, fleet, and an outstanding archer, Atalanta lived an idyllic woodland life among Artemis’ chaste community of nymphs at ease with the goddess’ prohibition of marriage.

Having enjoyed Jennifer Saint’s first two novels, Ariadne and Elektra, I was looking forward to reading her third one, Atalanta. Swearing she will prove her worth alongside the famed heroes of Greece, Atalanta leaves her forest to join Jason's band of Argonauts. We felt it at the same moment, the sudden tingling in the air as though the forest itself was alert with anticipation. Although romance isn’t a big part of Atalanta’s story, I also enjoyed following her relationships with first Meleager and then Hippomenes and I appreciated the way Saint found a way to retell the myth from a feminist perspective without portraying all of the men in a negative light. Coincidentally, I’ve just got this from the library (I liked the cover – I’m so shallow) without having seen your review.

While “Circe” was a powerful look at womanhood and motherhood, after reading a few other similar titles, I began to feel like they were all telling similar versions of these women’s experiences. Across the water, set into the sloping mountainside, was a wide cave with large rocks dotted about in front of the entrance.

Artemis might have chosen to shun her fellow Olympians, but the Arcadian woods were full of her companions. However, there is also a tenderness to her that balances her personality so that she feels like a true heroine. The laughter and soft splashes as nymphs joined Artemis in the water meant her story wouldn’t be overheard, but still she kept her voice so low that I had to strain to hear her. Although I don’t think her story has as much to say as many of the other female stories I have read so far, with a slightly slow middle section as most of the action happens around her, her beginning and end are very interesting and I think there’s still a lot of purpose in letting her take centre stage. After thirteen years as a high school English teacher, she wrote ARIADNE which tells the legend of Theseus and the Minotaur from the perspective of Ariadne - the woman who made it happen.
