A fitting rejoinder to Carlen's 'Criminal Women', this engaging collection offers real insights into the lived experiences of women involved in our criminal justice system and the chasm that remains between the criminal and social justice responses." Jane Scoular, University of Strathclyde The study’s findings suggest that gender stereotyping by judges was the main driver of the sentencing gender gap. Drawing on wider evidence from the US, Philippe points to the influence of paternalism among male judges, who may view women as fragile and perhaps less able to cope with prison. The female killer is not only the killer of her abuser or the femme fatale, the female killer is a diverse faction within the offender population. These women range from the likes of Myra Hindley to Wanda Jean Allen, no two are the same and no two offences have the same characteristics. It is imperative that unification or classification of types of killing does not guide our understanding of these crimes. To create an overarching explanation of female killing will result in a misrepresentation of many of these women. Women who kill their own children have very different experiences and driving factors to that of a woman who killed her abuser or killed out of love of the thrill. The two overarching factors that are apparent in most female killers’ motives are emotional and psychological reasons (Mann, 1992), it has to be accepted these are more prevalent in some cases in comparison to others. To conflate each of these will result in the creation of one homogenous group with expectations that their behaviour will be similar to one another. This helps no women; it gives them little faith that society really understands what they have been through. They lose belief and faith that people are willing to listen. There is unlikely to be much sympathy for jihadist women who return to the UK, but the system ought to rise above visceral, emotional responses. Travelling to join a terrorist organisation is a crime in and of itself. Some girls were stopped by the authorities at airports before leaving the country, and careful decisions were made as to whether prosecution was necessary; often it was not. But when women return and there is evidence of complicity in terror, recruitment, cruelty to enslaved women or other criminal actions, they will face trial, and if convicted, will rightly receive long prison sentences. In this inspiring and topical collection, scholars from the Criminal Women Voice, Justice and Recognition Network imaginatively bring to the fore the important voices and experiences of women in conflict with the law.” Loraine Gelsthorpe, University of Cambridge Women’s Biographies through Prison – Verity-Fee, Phoenix, Iris and Angel, with Hannah King, Kate O’Brien and Fiona Measham Dreadful crimes challenge our beliefs in fundamental goodness, and if there is no understandable motive, such as jealousy or greed or a response to some form of provocation, we cannot comprehend them. These results reflect a common pattern in society whereby individuals tend to discriminate less against people of a similar demographic to themselves. In this case, female judges were less likely to positively discriminate towards female criminals.Relationships are very important to the rehabilitation of women and can be both protective or criminogenic factors.

discrimination, gender construction and battered women who kill. Feminist legal studies, 3(2), 185-206. Safeguarding Minister Victoria Atkins will continue to lead on this work, alongside the Home Secretary and Women and Equalities Minister Liz Truss. Nevertheless, my experience of seeing the human cost when legal standards are lowered and wrongful convictions follow has taught me the imperative of keeping the bar high. The profound misogyny of Isis means that some of these women will themselves have been victims of terrible abuse, and will have been subjected to duress and coercion. The legal system will have the difficult role of charting a course through uncorroborated accounts, fragile evidence and strong public hostility to determine where real guilt lies. This is the complex terrain of justice, and it requires our utmost vigilance.

The contents of the cases included books on sexual perversion, coshes, photographs of Downey naked and a tape recording of her screams. The voices of Brady and Hindley are clearly audible, remonstrating with the little girl, telling her to shut up and to cooperate. The child is threatened and told to put something in her mouth. The playing of that tape in court did more than any other piece of evidence to secure the convictions.
